History and Achievements

Our story till now…

CHIPS has always been shaped by the remarkable individuals who form the heart of the organisation—people who are passionately committed to the pursuit of peace in a world often torn by conflict. These individuals have held onto a vision that many consider unachievable: that two opposing sides, deeply entrenched in conflict, can reconcile and create lasting peace together. CHIPS’ philosophy is rooted in biblical principles and the example of Jesus; CHIPS teams have worked with unwavering faith in Jesus’ teaching and perseverance. It is this enduring legacy that we continue to build upon today.

Roy Calvocoressi, a barrister and devout Christian, founded CHIPS in the 1960s. This followed 10 years of increasing frustration with the legal system’s rigid approach to justice; identifying one side as ‘innocent’ and the other as ‘guilty.’ Through prayer and bible study, Roy searched for a Christian response. What he found was a constant mention of peace and the love of God whilst newspapers were filled with reports of conflict. Equipped with a biblical understanding of peacemaking, he set out to put these principles into practice. This led him to Cyprus in 1966, where he gathered a team to work at the heart of the division between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
