In 1966, CHIPS launched its first peacemaking initiative in Cyprus, caring for abandoned orange groves in divided communities. As the trees flourished, so did hope—local people began returning to tend their land, rekindling relationships fractured by fear and mistrust. This work set a powerful precedent for CHIPS' future, showing that even in the heart of conflict, small, practical acts of peace could rebuild trust and transform communities.

Inspired by its work in Cyprus, CHIPS sought to establish a community house in Belfast where Protestants and Catholics could live together as a model of reconciliation. Although the plan proved too difficult to sustain amid the conflict, the house became a hub for local peace initiatives, hosting activities for children, youth, and the elderly in a divided area. While CHIPS eventually withdrew, its efforts contributed to a broader movement of small peace-focused houses in Belfast, demonstrating the power of grassroots reconciliation.

CHIPS began its work in the Philippines in 1974, supporting local leaders to bring peace and development to communities divided by conflict. In Nueva Viscaya, CHIPS launched an innovative rural development project that united farmers and officials through improved farming techniques, rice-growing competitions, and community-led planning—boosting harvests and healing divisions exploited by insurgents. The team’s holistic ministry wove faith, reconciliation, and practical change together, later extending to the Ilongot people.

In 1977, CHIPS expanded to Mindanao to support communities caught in violent civil conflict. Through farming, training, and later fishing projects, the team helped rebuild lives and promote peace between divided groups. Across both regions, CHIPS’ long-term, relational approach modelled how faith and practical action can transform communities from conflict to cooperation.

CHIPS began its India project in 1980 in Bangalore to tackle unemployment and poverty through small-scale, self-help industries inspired by Gandhian and Christian principles. Starting with sewing classes for women, the project grew into a garment and tie-making workshop supplying local markets and exporting through Traidcraft. Despite early setbacks, including financial and management challenges, it was revived and later transitioned to local leadership. By 1987, over 50 women had secure employment, and the project had become a model of sustainable livelihood, dignity, and community transformation in Bangalore’s poorest areas.

CHIPS began its work in Uganda in 1991, responding to a call to promote peace between the Karamojong and Iteso tribes in the conflict-affected north. The project launched in Kapelebyong with a vital water programme—drilling boreholes, constructing dams and wells, and laying pipelines to meet urgent needs. By 1994, CHIPS had expanded to Obalanga, broadening its work to include seed loans, beekeeping, rabbit and chicken farming supported by community vets, nutrition education, and the cultivation of tree nurseries and medicinal plants. These activities aimed to build trust and shared prosperity between divided communities. Later, CHIPS initiated work programmes such as road maintenance and bridge building, while advocating for increased access to government services. As peace returned to various areas, CHIPS relocated its bases accordingly, notably contributing to the redevelopment of Apeitolim parish—where integrated villages grew to over 18,000 people by 2009. In 2013, CHIPS successfully transitioned the project to full local ownership.
